Elbert “Bert” D. Ganshorn, age 99, Nappanee, passed away peacefully at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday June 23, 2016 at Greencroft, Goshen.
Elbert was born Sept. 5, 1916 in Leesburg to Homer and Cora (Thomas) Ganshorn. He was an Atwood High School Graduate. He married Mabel I. Cain on April 24, 1938 in Etna Green, she preceded in death on Nov. 24, 2013. He was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church since 1950, prior to 1950 he was a member at Mt. Tabor Church of God. He was a Charter and lifetime member of (Early Bird) Kiwanis, Nappanee. In his early years he operated a Grocery/General Store at Community Center, south of Nappanee. He then operated several bread routes for Huffman’s Bakery, Nappanee. He joined Les Miller, of Warsaw, in the Insurance and Securities Business and continued in the business in Nappanee, until retirement in 1979. For many years Elbert and Mabel wintered in Bradenton, Fla.
Elbert is survived by a son: Jerry L (Sue) Ganshorn; daughter: JoAnn Barrett; four grandchildren: Alex Ganshorn, Elizabeth Lerch, Chris Ganshorn, and Tony Ganshorn; four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ganshorn; and son-in-law, Allen Barrett.
Cremation will take place. Graveside services are being planned at a later this summer at Stony Point Cemetery, south of Nappanee.
Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
