Mike R. Mishler

Mike R. Mishler, 64, Nappanee, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Elkhart General Hospital.

He had been a patient there since Tuesday night. He was born June 15, 1951, in Elkhart to Robert and Delores (Croy) Mishler.

Surviving is his wife, Karen; daughter, Angela Hemingway, Fort Wayne; sons: Clinton Michael Mishler and Brent (Rhiannon) Mishler, both of Nappanee; grandchildren: Jordan Merchant and Jaxsen Maltos; father, Robert Mishler, Blanca, Colo.; and sisters: Debra K. (Duane) Sparbel and Karen (Ricky) Beaver, both of Syracuse.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores, brother, Bradley Allen Mishler, and stepfather, Wayne Boggs.

Cremation will take place and there will be a celebration of life service at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Lavere J. Rouch

Lavere J. Rouch, age 86, of Nappanee, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 2:15 a.m., Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born April 8, 1930, in Lakeville to Lawrence P. and Mary Catherine (Loucks) Rouch.

Mr. Rouch lived his lifetime in the Lakeville, Wakarusa, and Nappanee area. He was a 1949 graduate of Lakeville High School. On April 13, 1952, he married Betty Jean Pittman at Oak Grove Missionary Church. She preceded in death February 5, 2008. Lavere retired from NIBCO in 1981 after working there for over 25 years. He also farmed.

Mr. Rouch was a member of Nappanee Missionary Church. He was a life member of Wyatt Coon Hunters and Conservation Club. He also was well known and respected as one of the best fast pitch softball pitchers in the area. He played in area leagues until his was 57 years old. He also helped coach NorthWood Girls Softball pitchers.

Surviving are his children: Gloria (Ed) Moser, Nappanee; John (Wanda) Rouch, Watkinsville, Ga,; David (Gretchen) Rouch, Ada, Ohio; grandchildren: Valarie Mathews, Matt Moser, Justin Rouch, Kendra Rickett, Katelyn Rouch, Zachary Rouch, Joshua Rouch, Moriah Rouch and Morgan Rouch; 2 great grandchildren; and brother: Elwood (Carolyn) Rouch, Middlebury. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty, and sister, Clarice Balmer.

Family and friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Nappanee Missionary Church Chapel and for one hour prior to the funeral service which will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, also at the Church.

Pastor Dave Engbrecht and Pastor Norm Reimer will officiate. Burial will be in South Union Cemetey.

Memorial contributions may be given to Nappanee Missionary Church.

Dolores Lee Culp

Dolores Lee (Weaver) Culp, 81, Nappanee, died at 6:10 a.m., Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Elkhart Hospice House. She was born Dec. 11, 1934 in Nappanee to Charles E. and Virginia Fern (Domer) Weaver.

Mrs. Culp was a 1952 graduate of Nappanee High School. On Feb. 22, 1953, she married  Ralph “Red” Culp in Nappanee, he preceded in death Aug. 22, 1997.

Dolores had worked at B&B Restaurant and Ozzie’s as a cook. She had also worked at Mutschler Brothers in Nappanee. She attended First Church of God, where she taught Sunday School for 50 years. She also was on the banquet, soup and salad bar and funeral committees for many years. Dolores enjoyed her family, hosting many holiday meals. She also enjoyed having coffee with her friends, enjoyed her church work and having lots of garage sales.

Surviving are her children: Randy (Diane) Culp, Fort Wayne; David (Pam) Culp; Karen (Jerry) Ousley, both of Nappanee; grandchildren: Brittany (Mike) Mills; Brent (Whitney) Culp; Brad (Sara) Culp; Brandon (Kara) Culp; Jeremy (Cindy) Pires; Mark (Jeanuea) Pires;  19 great grandchildren;  a great great granddaughter; brothers, Charles A. (Shirley) Weaver, Donald Weaver; James (Diana) Weaver, all of Nappanee; sisters: Dixie Roeder; Connie Thomas-Rosenberry, both of Nappanee; Carol (Jerry) Sherk, Gladewater, Texas; sister-in-law: Pat Weaver, Nappanee; stepsister: Becky Wajsyczrek, Osceola; and stepbrother: Stan Lutes, Florida. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Devon Weaver.

Family and friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for one hour prior to the Funeral Service, which will be at 10 a.m., Monday, May 23 at First Church of God in Nappanee. Rev. Sam Bennett will officiate and burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.

Nora Goss, 98, Nappanee, died at 3:05 a.m., Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa, where she had resided for 11 years.

She was born Oct. 22, 1917 in Millersburg, Ohio to Welby C. and Anna Mae (Druhut) Kurtz. On Aug. 15, 1936, she married John Irvin Goss in Plymouth. He preceded her in death Dec. 6, 1975.

Mrs. Goss was a lifetime area resident, except for several years, when they lived in Minong, Wisc., their “vacation home.” She was a housewife and for many years was a caretaker of South Union Cemetery. She was a member of Northwood Chapel. Nora enjoyed gardening, especially her roses and also raised chickens.

Surviving is a brother: LeRoy (Kate) Kurtz, Middlebury.

Preceding her in death were daughters: Veora A. and Letha F., both stillborn; sisters: Fannie Wagner, Dorothy Spicher, Erma Scarles, Genevine Klase; and brother: Delbert Kurtz.

Family and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 24 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for one hour prior to the funeral service which will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 25 at Northwood Chapel. Rev. Larry Pletcher will officiate and burial will be in South Union Cemetery.

Alan Jay Miller

Alan Jay Miller, 66, Nappanee, died at 4:40 a.m., Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa, where he had resided for three years.

He was born April 20, 1950 in Nappanee to Marvin A. and Mary (Borkholder) Miller.

Alan lived his lifetime in the Nappanee area. He attended Wakarusa schools. He was a member of Fairview Mennonite Church.

Surviving are his brothers: Leon (Esther) Miller, Fredricksburg, Ohio; Randy (Betty) Miller, Nappanee; and sister: Orpha (Daniel) Hershberger, Wakarusa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother and sister-in-law: Virgil and Sarah Miller.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 21 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 22 at Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church in Nappanee. Pastors Ray Stutzman and Gilbert Miller, Liberty Mennonite Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Elbert “Bert” D. Ganshorn

Elbert “Bert” D. Ganshorn, age 99, Nappanee, passed away peacefully at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday June 23, 2016 at Greencroft, Goshen.

Elbert was born Sept. 5, 1916 in Leesburg to Homer and Cora (Thomas) Ganshorn. He was an Atwood High School Graduate. He married Mabel I. Cain on April 24, 1938 in Etna Green, she preceded in death on Nov. 24, 2013. He was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church since 1950, prior to 1950 he was a member at Mt. Tabor Church of God. He was a Charter and lifetime member of (Early Bird) Kiwanis, Nappanee. In his early years he operated  a Grocery/General Store at Community Center, south of Nappanee. He then operated several bread routes for Huffman’s Bakery, Nappanee. He joined Les Miller, of Warsaw, in the Insurance and Securities Business and continued in the business in Nappanee,  until retirement in 1979. For many years Elbert and Mabel wintered in Bradenton, Fla.

Elbert  is survived by a son: Jerry L (Sue) Ganshorn; daughter: JoAnn Barrett; four grandchildren: Alex Ganshorn, Elizabeth Lerch, Chris Ganshorn, and Tony Ganshorn; four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ganshorn; and son-in-law, Allen Barrett.

Cremation will take place.  Graveside services are being planned at a later this summer at Stony Point Cemetery, south of Nappanee.

Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.

Charles William Green Jr.

Charles William Green Jr., 80, Nappanee, died unexpectedly at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital Emergency Room.

He has dealt with diabetes and heart conditions for many years.

He was born Oct. 6, 1935 in Clarksville, Tenn. to Charlie and Ruby (Streetman) Green. He married Retha Kowalczyk  Feb. 3, 1969 in Nappanee at the Nazarene Church. He retired from Vitreous Steel in 2013. Charles was known as “Antique Charlie.” He liked cars-gasoline and steam engines.

Surviving are his wife, Retha; daughters:  Jeanie Woods, Carol Sue, Kansas City, Mo.; and Tonya (Craig) Shupert, Osceola; sons, Charles Eugene “Chuck Jr.” Green, LaPorte; and Mark Green, Nappanee; stepsons: Rex Kowalczyk, Atwood; and Mikeal (Misty) Harris, Savannah, Tenn.; many grandchildren; and many great grandchildren; brothers: Pete (Pat) Green, Ligonier; and Frank (Joan) Green, Milford; sister, Elizabeth (Lonnie) Spencer, Va.; half sister: Jane (Miller) Dermott, Bremen; and half brother, Jimmy (Shirley) Wallace, Bremen.

He was preceded in death by a son, Rick L. Green; grandson, Kevin Shupert; brother, John Green; and parents, Charlie and Ruby Green.

Family and friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 28 and one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service on Friday, July 29, all at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Burial will be at Stony Point Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be given to the family.

Eryl D. Burnworth

Eryl D. Burnworth, 92, Nappanee, died at 1:23 a.m., Monday, Sept. 19, 2016 at Greencroft Healthcare Center, Goshen, where she had resided since April. 

She was born Dec. 26, 1923 in Britton, Okla. to Ernest and Alma (Ward) Brown. She was a 1941 graduate of Huntington High School. 

On Dec. 29, 1942 she married Ralph C. Burnworth. He preceded in death May 9, 2004. She was a homemaker. In 1970 Ralph and Eryl moved to Nappanee from Hastings, Mich. Eryl attended Nappanee Missionary Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading the Bible, fishing with her husband and playing cards. She also enjoyed photo albums, scrapbooking, and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by a son, Jeffrey D. Burnworth, Nappanee; daughters: Linda D. (Steve) Juhasz, South Bend; Kathy J. (Paul) Clifton-Thompson, Phoenix, Ariz.; Susan A. (Tim) Morton, Warsaw; grandchildren: Andy Sheets, Joey Sheets, Wes Burnworth, Adam Burnworth, Brianne Hershberger, Scott Rouch, Daniel Rouch, Kimberly Rouch Miller, Nicole Clifton, Christopher Clifton; 16 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; sister, Lois A. Rankin, Phoenix, Ariz. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Janice Grimes, Marjorie Rodak, and Mary Sue Baker.

Family and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.

Roland E. Heckaman

Roland E. Heckaman, 84, Nappanee, died at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa. 

Roland has lived the past 3 ½ years at Miller’s Senior Living in Wakarusa. He was born June 22, 1932 in Elkhart to Oscar and Aleda (Foeckler) Heckaman. He has lived his entire life in this area. Roland was a graduate of Nappanee High School. 

On June 29, 1951, he married Patricia Schmucker in Nappanee. She preceded him in death March 15, 2013.

Mr. Heckaman had worked at Heckaman Homes and Nappanee Wood Products and at Your Flower Shop in Nappanee. He was a member of Nappanee Church of the Brethren and had attended Good Shephard Church in Bradenton, Fla. during the winter months. He had been a member of the Nappanee Lions Club for 25 years. He was a craftsman and enjoyed working with oak. He also enjoyed traveling and golf.

Mr. Heckaman is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Wayne) Kline, Goshen; daughter-in-law, Brenda Heckaman, Nappanee; grandchildren: Stephanie (Jim) Blair, Danya (Moe) Pippen, Tony Adams, Derick Heckaman; great grandchildren: Kaylee, Sloan, Cody, Amanda, Erick, Breanna, Emmy Jo; great great grandchildren: Jana, Caleb, Daubion; brother, Stan Heckaman; and sister, Shirley Cunningham, both of Nappanee. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Dennis Heckaman, and brothers, Junior, Carl, and Lamar.

Family and friends may call from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, followed by funeral services at 4 p.m. Rev. Janet McFall-Brown will officiate and burial will be in South Union Cemetery.

Carl ‘Kelly’ Hunsberger Jr.

Carl “Kelly” Hunsberger Jr., 87, Wakarusa, went home to be with Jesus, at 4:42 a.m., Friday, Sept. 30, 2016 at his residence.  He was born Feb. 3, 1929 in Elkhart to Carl Sr. and Ruth (Mishler) Hunsberger.

Carl Hunsberger was a 1947 graduate of Wakarusa High School and served in the Indiana National Guard. On April 25, 1948, he married Geraldine “Deanie” Mae Buzzard. She survives along with their children: Linda (Larry) Andrews, Nappanee; Carla (Daryl) Kauffman, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Steve (Ronda) Hunsberger, Wakarusa; grandchildren: Tyler (Nicci) Sloat, Amy (Ben) Wilson, both of Goshen; Kelli (Vic) Branstetter, California; Angela (Bill) Curtis, Michigan; Kyle (Brooke) Hunsberger, South Bend; Kelsey (Luis) Morales, Goshen; 11 great grandchildren; and sister, Jeanette Verheye, Wakarusa.  He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, SSGT Travis Hunsberger, Green Berets who was killed in Afghanistan in 2008.

Carl Hunsberger was the owner and founder of Kelly’s Woodcraft in Wakarusa, which is Kelwood Designs today. The business began in 1951. He had also worked at Honey Crest of Elkhart, Brown and Brown in Wakarusa, and Nappanee Wood Products. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkhart and formerly attended Bible Baptist Church in Wakarusa, where he had been an Awana leader. He was a member of the Wakarusa Lions Club and a former member of the Wakarusa Fire Department. Kelly loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed church basketball and soft ball, trail rides with his horses, traveling, camping, elk hunting trips in Montana and fishing trips in Canada.

Private family services have been arranged with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home in Wakarusa.

Kelly R. Kuhn

Kelly R. Kuhn, 51, Nappanee, died at 10:20 am, Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016 at her residence after a three year battle with ALS.

She was born Feb. 10, 1965 in Bremen to George E. and Carol Diane (Deardorff) Stanifer.

Kelly lived her lifetime in Nappanee. She was a 1983 graduate of NorthWood High School. Her first marriage was to Lee Lawmaster, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 17, 1988, she married Ted A. Kuhn in Nappanee.

Kelly was a member of Nappanee Church of the Brethren where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. She was a former Girl Scout leader. Kelly was an accomplished bowler. She bowled in leagues at the former Gold Crown Lanes in Nappanee, where she held several records, including Nappanee Women’s Association high series. She was very involved in the youth bowling leagues and was NorthWood High School  Bowling Coach for six years.

Kelly had worked at Nautic Global Group in Elkhart.

Kelly Kuhn is survived by her husband, Ted; daughters: Misty (Darrel) Troyer, Brandy Kuhn, both of Nappanee; stepdaughters: Tiffany (Mark) Batterbee, Humboldt, Tenn.; Toni (David) Kuhn – Altfeld, Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren: Eddie Randall, Jaxon Troyer, Danea, Trey, Preston, Dakota Batterbee, Kennedy Troyer, Chandler Martz, Bryana , Samantha Croy; twin brother, Mike (Nicole) Stanifer, Nappanee; sisters: Tina (Tracy) Heath, Amy (Scott) Nicely, both of Elkhart; Tara (Allan)VanDeeByl, London, Ontario; and Lisa (Scott) Shaver, Mishawaka.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jason Stanifer.

Rayden Lee Trusty

Rayden Lee Trusty, infant son of Heather Marlow and Michael Trusty, Goshen, died at 9:15 a.m., Thursday, Oct.  13, 2016 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne where he had been transferred after his birth at 1:47 a.m. at Goshen Hospital.

Rayden is survived by his parents; sister, Raelynn Marlow;  brother, Ryder Oden both at home; grandfather, Jimmy Trusty, Nappanee; grandmother, Mary Bontrager, Goshen; grandparents, Homer and Gale Marlow, Goshen; great grandmother, Debbie Bradway, Elkhart;  great grandparents, Randal and Sharon Fisher, Nappanee; and Gordon and Ann Marlow, LaPorte.

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday Oct. 19 at the funeral home. Burial will be at South Union Cemetery.

Don W. Housour Sr.

Don W. Housour Sr., 85, Nappanee, died at 4:44 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital. He had been in failing health for one and a half years. 

Don was born June 2, 1931 in Wakarusa to Anson and Nellie (Loucks) Housour. He was a lifetime resident to the Nappane/Wakarusa area.  On April 15, 1953 he married Joyce M. Work, they were divorced in 1975, she survives.  His second marriage was to Carrie Bollinger on Aug. 30, 1975, she preceded in death March 1, 1998. He then married Phyllis Taylor on July 9, 1999, she survives. 

He attended Wakarusa High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Don was a retired truck driver for Beer and Slabaugh. He was a member of the Union Center Church of the Brethren. He served on the Wakarusa Fire Department for 50 years and was a member of the Wakarusa American Legion since 1953. He enjoyed truck driving, golfing and bowling. In retirement he wintered in Sebring, FL.

He is survived by wife, Phyllis; daughter, Charlotte (James) Ward, Three Rivers, Mich.; son, D.J.  (Chantell) Housour, Jr., Bowie, Texas; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Betty (Keith) Sinton, Pasarosa, Calif.; step children, Lynn (Robert) Prater, Bonita, Calif., Clark Vernon (Margaret) Taylor, Ludlous, Mass., Gary Ralph (Paula) Taylor, Cornelius, N.C.. 

Don was preceded in death by his sisters, Wanita Horn, Eleanor Conrad, Annabelle Horn; brothers, Dale Housour, Tony Housour; infant brothers, Donald and Ronald Housour.

Friends and family may call from 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21 funeral service at Union Center Church of the Brethren.  Rev. Wilma Irene Hochstetler, 92, Nappanee, died at 12:00 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at Goshen Health Hospital.

She was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Marshall County, to Andrew and Katie (Yoder) Slabaugh.

Wilma was a homemaker and had worked at Evangel Press, Greencroft Healthcare in Goshen, and GCI Inc. in Nappanee.  She married Jesse E. Hochstetler May 30, 1943 in Marshall County. He preceded her in death Dec. 25, 2015.

She and Jesse have been members of the Brethren in Christ Church in Nappanee since 1948.

Surviving Wilma are children: Paul (Randy Colburn) Hochstetler of South Bend; Esther Burdette of Charleston, S.C.; Lamar (LeAnn) Hochstetler of Nappanee; Wayne (Marilyn) Hochstetler of Fort Collins, Colo.; Shirley (James) Cox of Rosman, N.C.; and Darrel (Diane) Hochstetler of Syracuse; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and sister Inez Helmuth of Goshen.

Wilma was preceded in death by her son, Devon Hochstetler; a grandson; siblings: Lydia Ann Miller, Katie Walters, Edna Mast-Yoder, Mary Stutzman, Fannie Slabaugh, Cora Martin, and Delbert and Elmer Slabaugh.

Dennis John Zent

Dennis “Denny DZ” John Zent, 87, Nappanee, died at 6:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at Goshen Hospital, after a long battle with cancer. 

He was born May 16, 1929, in Calumet City, Ill., to Earl R. and Gertrude J. (Vogel) Zent. Dennis graduated from Lakeville High School. He married Ruth Thornburg on Oct. 30, 1949.

In 1960 he moved to Nappanee from Plymouth. Dennis worked for the Nappanee Street Department for 30 years, as an Equipment Operator, and also served a short time as Street Commissioner. Prior to that from 1946-1951 he was a Forklift Operator at Studebaker, and then worked at Mutschler Bro’s. He was a member of the Nappanee Fire Department for 33 years. He enjoyed model cars, drawings and watching his son play softball.  As a Motorcross and Drag Racing enthusiast he followed his son to many races.  He was a member of the Son’s of American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Dean (Keli) Zent; granddaughter, Samantha Zent. 

He was preceded in death by a son, Denny Zent. 

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and one hour prior to the 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 funeral service all at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Cremation will follow and burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth at a later date.

Allen S. White II

Allen S. White, II, Milford, died at 11:34 a.m., Thursday, October 27, 2016, at Elkhart General Hospital, from complications of heart problems. 

He was born November 7, 1959, in Worchester, Mass., to Allen B. and Delcie (Callogne) White.  Allen graduated from Milford Mass High School, and attended Massachusetts University. He was raised in Milford, Mass. and in 1980 he moved to this area. 

In 1992 he married Linda Glassley.  He was a restaurant/bar owner and served as a bartender in this area. 

Allen was a member of the Son’s of American Legion and the Syracuse Eagle’s Lodge. He enjoyed being the facilitator of fun, eating and drinking with family and friends. 

Most importantly he was very supportive of all veterans. 

He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Stephanie White, Goshen; son, AJ “Allen” S. (April) White III, Goshen;  grandsons, Dillon, Dalton, and Devin; sisters: Debbie (Vinny) Grudinsky, Jupiter, Fla.; Darleen (Dennis) MacDonald, Uxbridge, Mass.; Donna (Ray) McCallion, Virginia Beach, Va.  

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Giacomuzzi. 

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31 and one hour prior to the 4 p.m. funeral services on Tuesday, Nov. 1 all at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.

Dorothy L. Smith, 95, New Paris, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 at her residence. 

Dorothy was born April 28, 1921 in Lima, Ohio to Claude and Mary (Balsbaugh) Miller.

Dorothy moved to New Paris in 1942. She married Kenneth B. Smith Oct. 17, 1942 in Mexico. He preceded her in death Jan. 8, 2010.

Dorothy was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife. She was a member of the Union Center Church of the Brethren in Nappanee. Dorothy was a volunteer at Elkhart General Hospital for many years. She loved her family and dogs.

Dorothy is survived by a son, John (Debra) Smith, New Paris; daughters: Cherylan (Bryon) Fervida, Milford; Mary (Alvin) Cripe, Nappanee, Sue (Jim) Tierney, Osceola; grandchildren: Jeff, Ken, and Heath Fervida, Trisha Warren, Angie Woods, and Heather Brenner, Crystal Sheward, Clint Cripe, and Trey Cripe, and Josh Tierney, Justin Tierney, Jessie Matteson, and Bradley Tierney; and 26 great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, and a sister, Kathryn Warner.

Dorothy will be cremated, and family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Union Center Church of the Brethren. Revs. Frank Ramirez and Rhonda Dorn will officiate.  Inurnment will follow at Union Center Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be given to the Samaritan’s Purse, Inc. or to the Elkhart County Humane Society. 

Harold Eugene ‘Jack’ Silvers

Harold Eugene “Jack” Silvers, 86, Nappanee, died at his grandson’s (Tony Silvers) residence surrounded by his family, at 3:15 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, after a brief illness. 

He was born May 3, 1930 in Hicksville, Ohio to John and Alta Silvers.

Jack Silvers moved to Nappanee at the age of 13. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. On May 11, 1951, he married June Maust.  She preceded him in death Sept. 28, 2001.

Jack retired from Nappanee Wastewater Utility where he had worked for over 25 years. He was a member of the Nappanee American Legion and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was a former member of the Nappanee Conservation Club.  Jack was a diehard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his daughters, Sandy (Ivan) Miller, Okeechobee, Fla.; Jackie (Clem) Juarez, Wakarusa, Jill Overfelt, Nappanee; grandchildren: Tony Silvers, Stacey Myers, Brent Stouder, Bart Stouder; 17 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his companion for 11 years, Betty Ward, Nappanee; and a special caregiver, Angie Lee. 

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mike Overfelt; a great grandson, Stacey Myers; and brothers, Paul and Dick Silvers.

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for one hour prior to the funeral service, which will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 10also at the funeral home. Rev. Frank Ramirez from Union Center Church of the Brethren will officiate. Burial with military graveside services by the Nappanee American Legion will be in South Union Cemetery.

Mary E. Miller, 86, Bremen, died at 4:23 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016 at her residence from a long illness.

She was born Sept. 2, 1930 in LaGrange County to Ezra and Anna (Bontrager) Yoder.  On April 14, 1951, she married Sylvanus J. Miller in Goshen.

Mary lived her lifetime in this area.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Surviving are her husband, Sylvanus; children: Carolyn (Al) Bontrager, Shipshewana; Barbara (Kenneth) Miller, Bremen; Ruth (Roman) Yoder, Topeka; Carl (Edna) Miller, Shipshewana; Judy (Ray) Kemp, Nappanee; Leon (Dorothy) Miller, Bremen; Jerry Miller, Bremen; Arlin Miller, Milford; Glen Miller, Milford; Earl (Dawn) Miller, New Paris; Vera (Arlen) Lehman, Milford; Mervin (Debra) Miller, Nappanee; 66 grandchildren; 106 great grandchildren; and brothers: Perry Yoder, Goshen; Christie (Marlene) Yoder, Topeka; sisters: LeAnna (John) Schrock, Middlebury; twin sisters: Ada (Nelson) Miller, Shipshewana; and Katie (Tom) Humble, Middlebury; and brother-in-law, LaVern Miller, Shipshewana.

She was preceded in death by a  great grandson, Micah Schmucker; sister, Lizzie Mae (Yoder) Bontrager; and brothers, Elmer and Daniel Yoder.

Friends and family may call after 2 p.m., Monday, November 14 and all day Tuesday, November 15 at the family home (980 2B Road). Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 16 at the Lavon Miller Residence (470 2B Road). The Home Ministry of the Old Order Amish Church will officiate and burial will follow in Weldy Cemetery.

Marjorie Eleanor Miller

Marjorie Eleanor (Huffer, Peltier) Miller, 96, Nappanee, died at 11:20 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa after a brief illness.  

She was born Aug. 8, 1920 in Kosciusko County to Charles W. and Dessie M. (Gall) Huffer.

Mrs. Miller was a lifetime Etna Green and Nappanee area resident. She was a 1938 graduate of Etna Green High School. Her first marriage was to Gordon “Dutch” Peltier Oct. 5, 1940. They were divorced and he preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to Robert B. Miller Feb. 1, 1970 in Nappanee. He preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1999.

Mrs. Miller had worked at Nappanee Water Filter Company and Mutschler Brothers and was a homemaker. Eleanor always enjoyed family, music, and traveling. As a child, Eleanor attended Millwood Chapel. She had attended First Mennonite Church and more recently attended Union Center Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are her children: Donald C. Peltier, Westville; Nancy (Tom) Mishler, Nappanee; grandchildren: Donald Disher Jr., James Disher, Rosa Shultz, Lance Peltier, Nichole Miller, Brant Mishler, Brock Mishler; eight great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter. A daughter, Joanne Disher preceded her in death.  Also surviving are brother, Wally Huffer, Woodland, Calif.; nieces and nephews; and stepdaughters: Gloria  (Jack) Miller, Pierceton; Julie Kling, Bremen.  

She was also preceded in death by sister, Helen Frushour; brothers, Gene “Tex” Huffer, Marshall Huffer, and Stanley Huffer.

Family and friends may call from 2-8 Thursday, Dec. 1 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for one hour prior to the funeral service, which will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 2 at Union Center Church of the Brethren. Revs. Frank Ramirez and Rhonda Dorn will officiate.  Burial will be in Hepton Union Cemetery.
